Purples Mattresses By Thickness

4 reasons not to purchase a thick mattress & the best way to measure yours.

If you are reading bed in a box reviews and researching how to buy a mattress, be sure to consider mattress thickness. Purple has four mattress models, each with a different height. The original Purple Mattress has a support foam base, while the three hybrid mattresses are encased wrapped coil bases.

Two factors to consider when choosing a mattress are sleeping position and body type . These determine which mattress firmness is best for you. Most sleepers prefer medium to medium-firm mattresses, but many others prefer a firmer or softer mattress.

Purple mattresses are unique, thanks to the patented Purple GelFlex Grid. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer material gives each Purple mattress a Universal Firmness rating, which gives most users a good nights sleep.

Who Is This Best For

Mattress experts often suggest a specific type of cushioning for different types of sleepers. If you dont know what kind of sleeper you might be, you can simply look at the posture you generally end up in in the evening. It is common to classify you as one of three types that include Back, Side or Stomach Sleepers. What is the best mattress in each of these categories?

Memory Foam Mattress Toppers

Mattress Topper Types

Memory foam mattress toppers are very popular in the United States and elsewhere around the world. These mattress toppers are available in a huge range of brands, firmness ratings, options and sizes. They tend to be slightly pricier than other types of mattress toppers, but thats not always the case there are plenty of affordable and eco-friendly brands on the market today. A concern many people have when shopping for a memory foam mattress topper is off-gassing. This is the release of chemicals into your home as your mattress airs out, and it can cause a significant decline in your homes air quality. However, more and more manufacturers are stepping up to create mattresses that are eco-friendly, non-toxic and perfectly safe, even for tiny sleepers.

But something that few people seem to care about is the thickness of the mattress. Is this really important and what is the right thickness level.

Stops Your Mattress From Sliding

How Thick Of A Mattress Topper Do I Need?

The right bed foundation will prevent your mattress from sliding. This is especially important if you tend to be a sleeper who tosses and turns frequently. If your mattress slides around too much, it could hang off the base and potentially lose its structural support. The right bed foundation will keep your mattress in place.

Your Mattress Is Too Soft Or Too Firm

mattress is too Firm

With few exceptions, mattresses are one size sleeps all. You can choose between levels of firmness, ranging from plush to extra firm. Some mattress manufacturers even allow you to split your bed into two firmness levels. For instance, plush for you and medium firm for your partner.

That said, the particular level of firmness your mattress offers may not be ideal for you. You can change that. By adding a mattress topper to your bed, you can add a plush feel or even create additional support. Its economical and its eco-friendly, and adding a mattress topper will create a bed that has a firmness thats just right for your needs.

Features That May Affect The Thickness Of A Mattress

Most mattresses are made of 4 layers which include, comfort layer, support layer, transition layer and base layer.

  • Comfort layer This is the top most layer which gives you a blissful feeling when sleeping on the mattress. Comfort layer may comprise of several layers which provides excellent contouring, comfort, support, motion isolation and temperature regulation. It is the layer that determines the firmness, softness or the overall feeling of the mattress.
  • Support layer The support layer is the second layer from the top. Overall, the comfort and support layer should have a thickness of at least 4 inches to provide comfort.
  • Transition layer This layer may not be available in some mattresses and those with this layer are thicker than other mattresses. It is located between the base and the other layers. The major benefit of this layer is that it gives you extra support and comfort.
  • Base layer This is the bottommost layer and it is also called the foundation layer. It is normally made of a high-density material and contains a set of springs. This layer is very important because it determines the durability and breathability of the mattress. It also determines the overall structure and shape of the mattress.

    Back Sleepers & Stomach Sleepers

Back sleepers must also get some ample support for your lumbar area and a little bit in pressure relief. For heavier sleepers, you may need to choose an extra firm mattress since Purple might feel too soft and sleepers may end up sinking into the mattress too deeply. If youre between 130-230 points, this should be an appropriate choice for you. However, the preferences will vary from person to person.

The support issue is ever more frequent with stomach sleepers. They will definitely need a more solid foundation to avoid the build-up of any pressure points that can strain shoulders, necks, as well as lower backs. Being a stomach sleeper who weighs morethat is more than 130 pounds-is certain to require the most firm bed.

    What Is A Bunkie Board

mattress protector do i need allowing it to stretch over a thick mattress to furnish a proper fit

A bunkie board is a thin, rectangular piece of plywood that is used to create an extra layer of support for a mattress. Bunkie boards are often used in bunk beds or other types of sleeper furniture where there is limited space. They can also be used to give a softer feel to a harder mattress.

Bunkie boards come in different thicknesses, and you should choose the one that is best suited for your needs. If you are using the bunkie board as an extra layer of support, then you should get one that is thicker than the mattress itself. However, if you are just looking for added comfort, then a thinner bunkie board will work fine.

Pros of a Bunkie Board Cons of a Bunkie Board
Bunkie boards have a low profile. Low profile makes it easy for you to sit down or get out of bed. Bunkie boards reduce airflow. This can cause the mattress to trap heat and make you sleep hot
They are suitable for mattresses of all sizes If your queen size bunkie board is made of wood, it can easily warp when used in humid climates
Absorbing and Distributing Pressure Some people find them uncomfortable to sleep on
Can be used with both modern bed frames and traditional box-spring and mattress set-ups Not all bunkie boards are created equal be sure to measure the height
Available in a variety of sizes

How Do I Choose A Mattress Topper

A mattress topper is a great way how you can make your sleep more comfortable and how it will not be too deep. There are many other differences between how toppers and mattress thicknesses work.

A thicker one will be softer, so it is a good choice if you want extra cushioning but do not like sleeping on a really soft surface. On the other hand, a thinner mattress topper has more support for your body while still being comfortable enough.

A good mattress topper can also prolong mattress durability and increase your comfort during sleep. Choose the topper based on your weight and medical conditions. If you need extra comfort and softness, buy a thicker topper.

So how tall is a mattress? The standard mattress height, or average mattress height, is 8- to 12-inches however, these days it’s common to find 14-, 16-, and even 18-inch mattresses. When it comes to mattress height or “mattress thickness”, how do you choose? Here are some guidelines.

    About The Different Mattress Layers

Another thing to consider when thinking about mattress thickness is all of the different layers that mattresses tend to have inside of them. For instance, most mattresses are made up of two distinct layers the comfort layer and the base/foundation layer.

The comfort layer is the plush top layer that is, well, the most comfortable. What this layer is made of depends entirely on the type of mattress that was purchased. For some innerspring mattresses, this layer is made up of materials like cotton, wool, or sometimes even poly-foam. Latex, hybrid, or memory-foam mattresses are made up of layers with things like gel, latex, and different types of foam, as their name suggests. Standard of quality recommends that you make sure your new mattress has at least 4 inches of these layers to help aid proper comfort throughout the night.

Additionally, the comfort layer can consist of two separate layers, the contour layer and the support layer. These layers are designed specifically for one to offer support and for the other to offer comfort. Either way, mattress providers are constantly looking for new ways to keep up with the popular demand.

It would make sense to assume that the thicker, the better– and in most cases you may be right– but finding the right mattress that has the proper height will depend on many things like personal preference, weight, and whether or not you have any issues with mobility or getting in and out of bed.

Firm Mattress With A Plush Top

    Puffy Mattress Review

    May 29, 2021

    BrandiCloud Raleigh, NC

I would describe as this a firm mattress with a plush top. I feel supported but has a softer top. It took a while to get used to it. I changed from an old unsupportive mattress with a 5 foam topper. That seemed really comfortable at first. Then after several months my back and hip pain became much worse. Was advised to buy a firmer mattress. I was able to go in store and try several of Sertas mattresses before I decided on this one. After adjusting to the firmness I really like it and back pain has lessened. I use with the Serra Motion Essentials which makes sleeping on my back more tolerable.

Hey Mike, I’m not an expert by any means but I would encourage you to look at some of the documents supplied by the mattress underground. Also, one thing that you said alarmed me. You said you need a full sized mattress. At your height, a king sized mattress seems more appropriate. I only know this from personal experience as I am 5’9″ and I find that a full sized mattress is barely ok for me but my queen sized mattress is just right.

    Your Partner Tosses And Turns

Theres little more frustrating than being awoken several times each night by a partner who cant find a comfortable position. He or she tosses and turns and causes the whole bed to bounce and shake. You can eliminate this frustration by adding a mattress topper. Latex and foam mattresses are especially good at motion isolation, allowing you and your partner both to rest more easily. Even if you have an innerspring mattress, a quality mattress topper can greatly reduce the amount of movement youll feel from your partner throughout the night.

    Reinforced Metal Bed Frame

More supportive that a collapsible metal frame, a reinforced metal frame would not generally need a boxspring. The additional metal supports across the frame help provide even weight distribution throughout the frame. This limits sagging or uneven wear on the mattress and essentially offers the same supportive foundation that a traditional boxspring would provide.

Does Thickness Matter In Memory Foam Mattresses

Yes, thickness does matter in any mattress, and the same is true for a memory foam mattress. The thickness of the mattress is directly linked to luxury and comfort, but this doesnt imply, high thickness indicates more comfort. So, lets have a glance at this aspect.

Memory foam mattress comes in a wide range of thicknesses ranging from 3 inches to 14 inches and mattress toppers as well.

While selecting a comfortable memory foam mattress, you need to look after two other aspects that correlate with the mattresss thickness. The first is the height of the bed from the ground and the thickness of the mattress topper.

Your bed should be at the height of at least 20-25 inches so that your feet can touch the floor and help you get in and out of bed comfortably. Combine the thickness of the mattress along with the height of the bed to know the ideal height.

The next aspect is the mattresss thickness, which is crucial as this will be the luxury giver to you and your body. A healthy cushion and comfort is the soul of the memory mattress, and you dont want to compromise with that!
