Cleaning Tip: How To Clean Your Mattress

Cleaning a mattress isn’t as difficult as it sounds. It’s actually a pretty straightforward process. Just follow the below steps:

  • Uncover the mattress. First, remove all the layers from your mattress, including any sheets, covers, comforters, and mattress pads. Make sure to wash these layers as you’re cleaning your mattress. Once youâve got the bare mattress, you can start with a home vacuum cleaner.
  • Clear the dust. Use the upholstery tool on your vacuum cleaner by pressing it firmly on the surface of your mattress to loosen the dust from its surface. For the edges, use the crevice tool and do the same action. You can also use this to clean in between the layers of pillow-top mattresses.
  • Extract the mites. While a vacuum cleaner helps remove the dust off your mattress, you’ll want to run a clothes steamer over it to rid your mattress of mites. The heat from the steamer can go through the surface and clear the dust mites. While doing this, make sure that the steamer does not drip on the mattress. If you donât have a steamer, you can use your iron to let out bursts of steam.

How To Keep Your Mattress Like New

Once youve removed all the stains and odors from your mattress, you can keep it fresh by simply using a mattress protector, not just a fitted sheet. Look for one that provides hypoallergenic, waterproof protection. Heres the one I use. With a waterproof protector, youll never have to worry about mattress stains again.

Place the mattress cover over your mattress and add your fitted sheet. If you use a foam topper or mattress pad to make your bed softer, it belongs on top of the mattress cover but under your fitted sheet. Wash your mattress cover monthly to keep it fresh, and let your mattress air out while its in the washer. Fresh air and sunshine are two great ways to eliminate mattress odors and hidden mold.

Try To Make The Mattress Stain Disappear

Theres more than one way to attack your specific mattress stain, so you might have to experiment patiently. Before you spot clean, remember to dab up as much of the liquid as possible wiping or scrubbing could spread your stain. Use cloth or sponge rather than paper towels which can disintegrate. Take special care not to get your mattress too wet. Next, hoover your stain to remove the dust and dirt, making it easier for you to clean it properly. When disaster strikes, put your sheets on a cool wash, because hot water will set any stains that you havent successfully dabbed off.

Top tip: pillow top mattresses are more absorbent, so youll have to clean the stain quickly before it seeps deep into the fibres plus, they take longer to dry out. Of course, you shouldnt put sheets on a damp mattress of any kind.

Clean The Mattress With Natural Detergents

In fact, you can still use common detergents to wash the mattress. However, you should only use these substances in a small area with stubborn stains. In addition, you should not use strong detergents on the entire rubber mattress as it will reduce the durability of the mattress and damage the elastic structure of the rubber. The mattress should be washed using natural detergents such baking soda, alcohol, salt, or chalk. • Thanks for these tips! I really need to freshen up the mattress in my sons room. Cant wait to put baking soda on it now.

  • RoslynMay 3, 2014 at 8:04 am

Hey Becky! My son has just turned 3 and at the beginning of the year we started toilet training him. He occasionally has accidents and sometimes it goes through the protector we have on his bed and wets the mattress. I was wondering how you would go about cleaning this as some times we dont know until he gets up in the morning. It is just coming into winter now but i am afraid that when summer hits it may bring out the smell, I have been cleaning it with disinfectant. Any other ideas? Would the baking soda and essential oils help draw out smells as well as any left over moisture? Thanks Toni for posting this on your page too!

Keep Your Mattress Cleaner Longer With A Mattress Protector

A quality mattress protector should be hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, waterproof yet breathable, and highly durable. Our premium Nolah BambooMattress Protector is 100 percent waterproof but still thin and quiet, so it doesn’t disrupt comfortable sleep.

When Should I Clean My Mattress

Because our recommended technique takes a long time, its best to clean your mattress first thing in the morning. That way, you can let the baking soda do its job for 8 hours or more, and have things cleaned up by the evening. Alternatively, the day before an overnight trip is also another good option, as you can let baking soda sit on your mattress overnight.

How To Remove Urine And Sweat Stains From A Mattress

Weve dedicated a section of this guide purely to pee and sweat theyre two of the most common sources of mattress staining.

Both can leave strong stains and, in the case of urine, odors. To remove them, follow these steps:

  • Mix up a cleaning solution:
  • 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • Three tablespoons of baking soda
  • A few drops of liquid dish detergent
  • Stir the mixture until the baking soda is fully dissolved
  • You can either put the mixture into a spray bottle and spray the stained area or dab it onto the stain using a cloth. Use enough liquid so it soaks into the stain, but do not drench it.
  • Leave the solution to air dry for an hour or so. During this time, the peroxide will work to fade the yellowing of the urine or sweat stain.
  • How Often Should I Flip Or Rotate My Mattress

Flip or rotate your mattress every three months. If your mattress is the same on both sides, flip it one time and rotate it the next. If your mattress has only one side for sleeping, rotate it from end to end every three months. This habit will help prevent saggy spots and lumps and prolong the life of your mattress.

Make A Baking Soda Cleaning Powder And Sprinkle It Over The Mattress

Next, whip up a quick mattress cleaning powder by adding 1 cup of baking soda and 4-5 drops of essential oil to a jar.

Replace the lid on the jar and shake well to mix. If you have a king-size mattress, you may want to double the recipe to make sure you have enough of the baking soda mixture to cover it!

Then apply the baking soda cleaning powder to your mattress by sprinkling, shaking, or sifting it in an even layer across the entire surface of the bed. If you have a shaker top that fits onto your jar, that would definitely come in handy here! If you dont have a shaker top, a fine mesh sieve will work just fine too.
