Best Firm Mattress Winkbed
The WinkBed comes in four firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus . The Firmer version is my pick for the best firm mattress for combination sleepers. Built with a plush pillow-top, it offers a firm and supportive sleeping experience without sacrificing pressure relief. As for combination sleepers, theyll feel more on top of this mattress than in it, so they wont have to worry about feeling stuck in bed.
Best Mattress For Back Sleepers
If youre a back sleeper looking for a bed that will support you in your preferred sleeping position, then youve landed on the right page! In this guide, Im going to introduce you to the absolute best mattresses for back sleepers, including picks for back pain, those who sleep hot, budget shoppers, and more.
When Should I Replace My Mattress
There are two key signs to look out for if you’re not sure if you need a new mattress. Firstly, your mattress is showing visible signs of deterioration, such as lumps or dips. Secondly, you’re no longer getting a good night’s sleep, and are waking up with aches and pains. If you experience either of these, then it’s time for a new mattress. Still unsure? The Sleep Council advises you should replace your mattress every 7 years. In this time it will have been subjected to around 20,000 hours of wear and tear!

Sleep Positions: Different Needs For Different Positions
Now that weve established the key features of a mattress, lets discuss what factors are critical to consider depending on what position your body gravitates to during the night. Remember the amount of firmness to comfortably accommodate you will be affected by your body weight.
For back sleepers, firmness requirements are more subjective and a matter of taste rather than necessity. You want to look for a bed that supports the curve of your lumbar spine so that pressure doesnt build up in your hips or upper back when youre sleeping and your spine remains comfortably aligned.
Pressure relief tends to be more crucial for side sleepers because you are resting with the entirety of your weight pressing on a narrower surface of your body than if youre laying on your back or stomach. The line of your body tends to be curvier in this position, as well, so some additional softness may help ensure that no pressure builds up under hips or shoulders.
If youre like most individuals, you carry the bulk of your weight in your hips and they may sink deeper than the rest of your body in this position, causing you to lose optimal spine alignment. A firmer mattress with enhanced support or zoning through the middle of the mattress can often help counteract this for stomach sleepers.
Best Mattress For Combination Sleepers
Combination sleeping can be a tricky business. If youve never heard the phrase before, it basically just refers to a person who sleeps in multiple positions throughout the night. It can be difficult for these folks to find the best mattress for combination sleepers i.e. one that supports them across all of these different positions.
Luckily, Im here to introduce you to the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market today! Though they differ in terms of style, construction, and price, theyre all designed to sleep comfortably across multiple positions.

Here Are Some Guidelines For You:
- Don’t always go with the cheapest option you find This is a rule of thumb for most products you buy online. Spending less than $500 for a Queen-size mattress usually means the product is not as durable and wont provide you with better sleep quality.
- Higher price does not mean higher quality On the flip side, you dont need to put down thousands of dollars to get a comfortable bed. There are many great options that dont come with a hefty price tag.
- Go with the $1000 range for a Queen size This is usually where you will find the best bang for your buck.
- King / California King will cost slightly more You should increase the budget for King and California King to $1400-1500 as you will have more choices in that range.

Will You And Your Partner Both Be Able To Sleep On It
If you sleep with a partner yet your preferences differsay, you prefer firm but your mate likes something plusheryoull need to find a compromise. Lean toward whats most comfortable for the partner who has musculoskeletal issues , said the Cleveland Clinics Santhosh Thomas. If neither of you has an issue on that front, you could choose the firmer option and attempt to make one side softer with a twin-size mattress topper.
If you really cant find a mattress that works for both people, you have a couple of other options. Adjustable air beds, such as those from Sleep Number, let couples inflate the mattress with air to whatever firmness they want. Some bedding stores that have direct relationships with factories offer this option for foam and innerspring mattresses, too.
Also, if you wake every time your partner rolls overor your kids hop into bed with youyoull probably want to look for a mattress with good motion isolation. Foam mattresses across all price ranges tend to limit the sensation of movement, but you can also find this quality in more expensive hybrid and innerspring mattresses. Mattresses with pocket coils provide the best motion isolation .

Will I Stay Cool
Hybrids are great for cooling because the coils provide extra airflow. Add to that the fact that many of these beds also feature added cooling properties in their foam layers and cover. While many people enjoy sleeping on a traditional memory foam bed, these are known to overheat, which can cause the sleeper to wake up hot and sweaty. Combining the foam with breathable coils, though, should help with cooling.

What To Consider When Choosing Your Mattress
The most important aspect is that your spine stays aligned when you lie down. Your sleep position, body type and personal preferences for the feel and materials will all play a role in determining which mattress is best suited for your needs. You also want to consider cost, convenience, durability and any sleep issues i.e., whether you’re a hot sleeper, have back pain or get woken up by your sleeping partner. We’ll break down these topics to help you decide.

Health Issues Can Affect Your Mattress Choice
Many adults suffer from hip, joint, or back pain and this can have a large impact on the quality of your sleep if the pain isnt kept at a minimum.
You should consult with your doctor to see if they have any recommendations to help relieve your pain, but hybrid beds with medium to firm profiles tend to help with back pain because they keep the back properly supported. For joint pain, on the other hand, softer beds that offer pressure relief can help soothe the pain around sore joints.
Additionally, hot sleepers may want to consider a bed with temperature regulating properties to help cool them down at night.
Advantages Of Buying In A Store
- You can try it in person. If buying a bed sight unseen makes you nervous and you prefer to feel the bed, stores give you the opportunity to do so.
- There are decreased wait times and fewer shipping limitations. Most stores will have an onsite inventory of beds they sell onsite so you can take your new bed home the day you buy it. Because the store is local, you are assured that shipping is available to you.
- Stores may offer an included delivery service. For large furniture items like mattresses, the store may offer delivery as part of their price, which is convenient for those worried about installing their bed.

Who Are Hybrid Mattresses Best For
Hybrid mattresses are best for a wide variety of people, including hot sleepers, combination sleepers, heavier individuals, and those who are struggling to decide between a foam and innerspring bed. The added airflow from the coils makes these exceptionally cool for hot sleepers, and the bounce of the coils will help combination sleepers reposition easier. Heavier individuals can benefit from the enhanced support that comes from using coils. Lastly, hybrids offer a great solution for shoppers who are having trouble deciding between a foam and innerspring because they have both materials in them.
Company Reputation And Transparency
At Healthline, we look at the following criteria to determine a companys reputation and commitment to transparency:
- Does the company make unproven claims about health benefits the mattress offers?
- Have they been involved in any lawsuits in the past 3 years?
- Have they recalled any products in the past 3 years?
- Do they have a C rating or better from the Better Business Bureau?
- Does the mattress meet United States federal flammability standards?
Along with the companys business reputation, we also consider whether they provide clear, easy-to-find information about the materials they use in their mattresses and where theyre made. Youll typically find this information in the FAQ section of the companys website, if not directly on the product page.
If you like the mattress and the price, you may want to go for it regardless of what you find about the mattress companys reputation. But at the very least, its always best to check whether the mattress meets flammability requirements.

Can You Return A Mattress
Making a warranty claim on your mattress
This can be tricky, because arguments regarding comfort, faults and more can be considered subjective, or part of ‘normal wear and tear’.
And while most mattresses have a 10-year warranty period, the small print is often overflowing with restrictions and conditions.
Take SleepMaker for example. While their warranty covers manufacturing faults, they won’t protect against a reasonable level of dipping , comfort concern due to product selection, and heat issues. These are just some of the terms, but they illustrate the grey areas consumers can find themselves in
As our investigation into spring mattresses found, advertised and tested firmness rarely match up, and it’s likely that your purchase may not be as comfortable as you expect. However, this wouldn’t fall under a warranty claim in SleepMaker’s case. This isn’t exclusive to SleepMaker in fact, they’re one of the more upfront brands when it comes to outlining their claims procedure.

Returning a mattress
The onus largely falls on you, the buyer, to make the right purchase if you’re buying from a retailer, even when the industry practices are questionable. Because mattresses are used in the same manner as clothes and headphones, getting a refund under general consumer protections can be difficult.

Trial Period Warranty And Return Policy
Even if a thousand people love a mattress, it doesnt mean you will too. Everyones body is different, so youre going to respond to your mattress differently. Before you buy your mattress, make sure you pay attention to the trial period you have, whats covered under your mattress warranty, and the return policy. Most of our favorite mattresses come with a very generous trial period, warranty policy and hassle-free returns.
You should also try to give your mattress at least 30 days to break it in and see if its right for you before you kick it to the curb. For reference, most online mattress companies offer a trial period of 100 nights or more.
What If I Am A Combo Sleeper
There are many great mattresses that work for exclusive side sleepers and those who rotate between this and other positions. Combination sleepers should look at beds with an adaptable medium firmness, along with products that support easy repositioning through coil or latex layers. That being said, you should consider how much time you spend in each position. If the majority of the time is spent on your side, these beds should be a good fit for most. However, if most of your time is spent on your stomach and only occasionally on your side, you may opt for something firmer, which is usually preferred by stomach sleepers.

What Type Of Mattress Should I Buy
Despite what the internet and mattress salesmen may want you to believe, there is no any one material that is superior to another. Each person has their own list of preferences, which hopefully you have established by reading this guidance.
Got your shopping list handy? Awesome! Lets look at what features and selling points each material delivers, as well as the many different types of beds you can choose from.
Tuft & Needle Mattress
The Tuft & Needle is a surprisingly supportive all-foam mattress that back sleepers will enjoy. Its pretty breathable, which helps it sleep cool, and comes in at an affordable price, making it ideal for budget shoppers.
Although this bed has a fairly simple design, its still quite firm and a great fit for lightweight stomach sleepers, who weigh less than 130 pounds. Its key for stomach sleepers to have their hips elevated, so theyre in alignment with their spine. This helps prevent future back pain. The Tuft & Needle is a touch firmer than average, making it ideal for lightweight stomach sleepers since itll feel firmer to them than to heavier sleepers. Itd also be a great fit for back sleepers.
What About Coil Count
You may hear people talk about coil counts. There is a reason Ive written this much and havent really mentioned them until now. Theyre generally not important, as long as youre not getting the least-expensive mattress. There are too many variables to consider to compare coil counts in one mattress to another. Type of coil, gauge of the coil, the number of turns, whether or not its doubled up on the inside, etc. One mattress might have 1,000 coils, and another will have 900, but the 900 coil mattress might have a lot more steel in the coils overall.
The one thing I can say is to avoid is any mattress that has 420 or fewer Bonnell coils in a queen size. Those are only suitable for guest rooms, and theyre barely good for that. If the number is above that, youre probably fine.
Brooklyn Bedding Plank Mattress
The Plank mattress is an all-foam, flippable mattress with a firm side and an extra-firm side, which makes it great for stomach sleepers. Both sides of the mattress should provide them with the right level support they need.
The Brooklyn Bedding Plank is one of the firmest mattresses on the market, meaning theres very little room for sinkage when you lie on your stomach. Thats always the main thing I look for when recommending a mattress to stomach sleepers, since it helps align their spine and hips. This bed gives extra support around those delicate areas, making it ideal for those who want to maintain perfect sleep posture.
Memory Foam Mattress Topper
A mattress topper could be a great way to add the comfort you are looking for without shelling out hundreds of dollars for a new bed. While these can still be expensive, they are typically far less than a new bed and can foster the cushioning comfort you are looking for.
Memory foam toppers are made for beds of all sizes and many have great reviews. They can be used on any type of mattress to help relieve pressure. Shoppers could consider purchasing one of these to supplement their current sleeping situation or purchase it with a cheaper bed to provide their desired comfort.
For people who share a mattress and have different firmness preferences, one sleeper could use a foam topper to make their bed feel softer.
What Is The Best Mattress Topper For A Side Sleeper
If your bed is too soft or firm for you, you can add a mattress topper to adjust the beds feel. Look for a mattress topper with a medium firmness, providing pressure relief and contouring that your mattress lacks. Youll also need to consider the thickness and density of the topper. A thicker topper can provide more cushioning, and a denser material will deliver more support and longevity.
