How To Choose A Mattress

How much should a great mattress cost?

Experts agree that getting good sleep is one of the single best ways to maintain and improve our health. A mattress is a huge factor in our ability to sleep well, yet many people overlook its importance and keep using a mattress that fails to provide enough support and comfort.

A new mattress can be a sizable investment, but taking this step can unlock your ability to sleep better. As with any major purchase, you want to make sure that you choose wisely.

To help you get a handle on how to choose a mattress, we break down the key information piece-by-piece. With this guide, youll have the knowledge to find the best mattress with the right firmness and features to suit your needs and deliver great sleep night after night.

Why Are Mattresses So Expensive

Think of it this way, you spend a third of your life on your mattress, shouldn’t it be something that only improves your sleep. It all comes down to materials that are higher in quality and density thus, should be more durable and last longer.

Add in materials that have met various ECO-certifications like GOLS carried latex, GOTS certified cotton and CERTIPUR-US foams or natural flame retardants, high-density memory foam, individually wrapped coils and so does the price. If you want additional features like increased pressure relief or edge support, cooling technology and added padding.

Meanwhile, mattresses sold at third-party mattress showrooms, like Mattress Firm or Macy’s tend to have a higher markup because they have to pay for the space and staff, and even advertising. Of course, the luxury of trying a mattress in-store before you buy and the white glove delivery and old mattress removal are also typically worth the higher cost, if you’re after that type of convenience.

While there are mattresses in the sub-$500 category that may suit you just fine, they typically are made with fewer premium materials and may last for a few years as opposed to the typical seven to ten before starting to sag, dip, or lose support. Then, you’ll typically spend more money in the long run having to buy a second mattress sooner than you expected.

Innerspring / Hybrid Mattresses

Most mattresses youre likely to run into are the innerspring type. They have metal coils inside of the mattress with foams and fibers on the top.

The lower priced mattresses tend to use the older style coil in which theyre all tied together. The hourglass-shaped ones are called Bonnell coils, but other manufacturers have stronger variations on that type . These are generally a little less expensive than the individually wrapped coil, but dont contour as well and transfer more motion.

On the left are Sealy classic coils that are all tied together. On the right are the higher end individually wrapped coils.

The better innerspring mattresses will use individually wrapped coils. This type of coil allows the mattress to contour to your body from the coil level, which gives better support and causes less pressure. Additionally, wrapped coils are better at separating motion from side to side on the bed. So if one person bounces around or changes positions, the partner will not feel it as much. The downside? Theyre usually more expensive.

The foams above the coils will have varying densities. You can get a mattress with firmer foams on the top or softer foams on the top. Some will be in the style of a pillowtop .

Custom Adjustments Or Discounted Upgrades

Some companies place a premium on brand loyalty and customer satisfaction so much that they are willing to swap out firmnesses or upgrade models for free or a fraction of retail prices in order to make you happy. This is especially advantageous for folks who are unsure of what comfort level will work best for them and their partner, as the issue is easily corrected.

You can inquire as to the exact policy but some companies will even send you additional comfort layers to swap in or add to the existing mattress to adjust the feel of the bed and are more than happy to work with you to achieve the ultimate fit. These features can add considerably to the brands value and be a worthwhile investment of a few extra hundred dollars to help guarantee your satisfaction.

Cost Factors By Mattress Type

How much does a mattress cost? We round

From the table above, you can see that certain mattress types are more expensive than others. What makes hybrids more expensive? Why are innerspring mattresses among the most affordable? Below, we uncover the factors that impact each mattress styles price tag.

Hybrid

  • Hybrid mattressescombine foam comfort layers and a pocketed coil support core. The variety of materials increases the price point.
  • Hybrid mattresses are also among the most complex in design. Mattress manufacturers who sell hybrids create them with the intention of combining the best qualities of all-foam and innerspring beds. Creating a mattress that provides the ideal blend of support and pressure relief is costly and time-consuming, making the final product more expensive.
  • Hybrids require complex construction. Hybrids incorporate a mix of high-quality comfort layers, specialty foams, micro-coils, and other unique components that other mattresses dont contain.

Innerspring

Foam

Latex

Airbed

  • Airbeds feature air pockets in the support core or top layers of the bed. As opposed to simple air mattresses, airbeds can be very expensive.
  • Most airbeds feature highly technical designs that incorporate remotes and controls to inflate and deflate the bed on command, precisely tuning it to your bodys sleep style.
  • An airbeds price will rise if high-quality foams, like memory foam or latex, are used in the comfort layers.

What Mattress Do I Use

Even running a mattress review website, you can really only have one mattress you call your own.

I’m currently sleeping on the GhostBed Flex and I LOVE it. This affordable, but luxurious mattress performs well above its price range. It’s a medium firmness mattress that hugs and contours to your body.

If you’re in the market for a mattress, heres a few great reasons to try out the GhostBedFlex

  • Ultra luxurious build quality with reinforced edge support
  • Responsive support that helps relieve pressure in your back and hips
  • Cooling materials are great if you sleep hot
  • Great motion isolation
  • Is A King Size Mattress Worth It

For some couples, a large king size bed is essential for a good nights sleep. Some partners feel cramped on a queen mattress and need the personal space a king mattress offers. Others may toss and turn or sleep hot, disrupting their partners sleep if theyre close.

The split king variation provides partners with a way to sleep on their firmness preferences without compromising. If youre a side sleeper sharing a bed with a back or stomach sleeper, a split king mattress can meet your unique needs. Split king beds also pair well with adjustable bases.

Others may not need a king mattress to sleep well, but they often enjoy how the bed completes a master bedroom. Many single sleepers love the luxurious amount of space a king mattress offers.

Additional Costs For A New Mattress

The initial purchase price of a mattress is the biggest expense, but its not the only one. There are some extra expenses that youll want to budget for:

Shipping & Setup Costs: Depending on where you buy your mattress, you may have to cover the cost of shipping, in-home delivery and/or setup. If not included in the purchase price, expect to spend $50-$100 on shipping, and even more on white-glove in-home delivery. Some companies even offer removal of your old bed, for an additional fee. Many online companies now offer free shipping, so make sure to shop around.

Foundations & Accessories: Beyond the initial mattress purchase, youll also need to consider the cost of any accessories you will need. A foundation/box spring can be a major cost, and even small things like bedding can add up. The cost of these items varies significantly, but as with mattresses themselves, accessory prices tend to scale with the mattress size you purchase . Likewise, odd sizes like California King and Twin XL are more difficult to find accessories for, and many options are more expensive for these sizes.

Warranty & Returns: Some mattress warranties as well as return policies have expenses associated with them. For instance, some manufacturers require the customer to pay for return shipping during a warranty claim, or there may be restocking fees associated with a product return. Be sure to check the terms of each policy before purchasing.

What Influences The Cost Of A Mattress

    What Is A Good Mattress

In determining the cost of a mattress these three criteria carry the most weight:

    • Type: What your mattress is made of influences cost in a big way. All-natural materials tend to command higher prices than synthetic materials.
    • Size: Naturally, bigger mattresses cost more. The price of a twin mattress is roughly half the cost of a king.
    • Buying online: Purchasing a mattress online is less expensive than buying from physical stores, which usually have significant markups on mattresses.

Additional factors that contribute to mattress costs:

    • Shipping costs: Although many popular bed-in-a-box brands offer free shipping.
    • White-glove setup: This extra service can also include the removal of your old mattress.
    • Returns: Some warranties may place the burden of return shipping costs onto the customer.
    • Foundations and box springs, or other necessary accessories: Some of these add-ons may be a requirement for you to enjoy for your new mattress.

    What Is The Best Mattress

This is one of the most common questions that I get. Its a simple question, but the answer is not. The real answerit depends. Mattresses are not one size fits all. Your decision should be based on your specific sleep preferences. For a more in-depth look, check out our Mattress Reviews. Otherwise, below are our recommendations based on the category.

    Trial Warranty And Return Policy

Even if a thousand people love a mattress, it doesnt mean you will too. Everyones body is different, therefore youre going to respond to your mattress differently. Before you buy your mattress, make sure you pay attention to the trial period you have, whats covered under your mattress warranty, and the return policy. Most of our favorite mattresses come with a very generous trial period, warranty policy and hassle-free returns.

You should also try to give your mattress at least 30 days to break it in and see if its right for you before you kick it to the curb. For reference, most online mattress companies offer a trial period of 100 nights or more.

    Comfort Level Or Model Exchanges

Some brands are willing to allow shoppers to send in their mattress or comfort materials in exchange for a different comfort level or a new model altogether. If you find yourself tossing and turning because you accidentally purchased a mattress that is too firm or too soft, you can simply switch it out for one that suits you better. This is often free within the trial period, but after that time there may be a fee required.

What Makes A Quality Hybrid Mattress

Before purchasing a new hybrid bed, these are the top qualities to look for:

    • Coil count: Most hybrid mattresses are made with a pocketed coil system, which is incredibly high-quality and durable. However, you still need to worry about coil count. Ideally, you should look for a coil count of 600 to 1,000 when it comes to hybrid mattresses.
    • Foam density: Hybrid mattresses have a combination of coils and comfort layers made of polyfoam. When buying a high-quality hybrid mattress, you’ll want to look out for a foam density of 4 or 5 pounds per cubic foot. This will ensure your mattress lasts longer overall.
    • Special features: Since hybrid mattresses fall at the higher end of the price spectrum, many of them come with special features. You can commonly find hybrid mattresses with memory foam comfort layers or a soft pillow top.

How To Choose A Mattress For Back Pain

There are myriad potential causes of back pain, but an unsupportive mattress is one factor that should not be underestimated. In people without back problems, proper support may prevent pain from arising, and in people who already have back issues, the right mattress may help with cushioning and comfort.

Choosing the best mattress for back pain means considering the nature of that pain alongside other mattress needs and preferences. Some back pain is short-term and comes on suddenly. This is known as acute back pain. Other times, the pain persists over a long period of time and is known as chronic back pain. Back problems can start out as acute, such as from an injury, and become chronic.

A person with acute back pain may need only temporary relief from their mattress. This may mean using extra pillows or adjusting their sleeping position. For chronic back pain, more significant steps may be needed, such as choosing a mattress that is firmer or softer. Finding the right levels of comfort as well as pressure relief can help keep the spine properly oriented during sleep.

The optimal mattress may also depend on where a person experiences back pain.

    Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain affects the bottom five vertebrae in the lumbar area. It is the most common type of back pain and one of the leading reasons why Americans visit their doctor. This back region is vulnerable to bending and twisting that can harm the muscles and the spine itself.

What Kind Of Mattress Does Not Need A Box Spring

Most modern mattresses dont require a box spring to feel comfortable you only might need one with an innerspring mattress. You can even damage a foam mattress if you place it on a box spring. A box springs inner coils are too far apart to create consistent support, leaving room for a foam mattress to dip and stretch out of shape.

Do you have an old box spring you still want to use with a new bed? Try placing a piece of plywood over the box spring. Make sure the plywood is moisture-resistant, or else you might lift your mattress one day and find mold and mildew.

How Much Does Professional Mattress Cleaning Cost

How Much Does Good and A Brand New Mattress Cost?

You should expect to pay between £20 and £40 for professional steam cleaning, depending on the size of your mattress. Your bed might be a comfortable place to rest your head at night, but it’s also home to a host of bacteria, dust mites and in some cases bed bugs. With this in mind, it’s wise to get your mattress professionally cleaned every once in a while. Be aware that some companies have a minimum £50 call out charge, so it’s worth combining the job to include all mattresses in your home to avoid unnecessary costs.
