Natural And Organic Features
The Avocado Green mattress is known for its natural and organic materials, along with the companys eco-conscious manufacturing practices. Those features are a big reason these mattresses are more expensive.
Here are the materials and relevant certifications that show why Avocado Green mattress reviews are so positive:
- 100% GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex sustainably harvested from rubber trees. The material is antimicrobial, meaning that it prevents allergies and dust mites.
- 100% GOTS organic certified wool sourced from an Avocado-owned cooperative in India, which provides moisture-wicking and flame retardant properties.
- An organic cotton, button-tufted cover thats GOTS certified, is sourced in the U.S. and has no chemical adhesives.
Its also worth mentioning that all Avocado mattresses are handmade in the companys Los Angeles factory, GOTS and GOLS certified. The beds are also GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. This certification ensures that the materials satisfy strict standards for emissions of pollutants and chemical exposure.
All of these elements combined are why Avocado made our list of the Best Natural And Organic Mattresses.

Avocado Green Policies And Faqs
Are Avocado mattresses made in the USA?
Yes! The mattresses are handmade in California with non-toxic and organic materials.
Does the Avocado mattress need a box spring?
While a box spring can technically work with the Avocado mattress, it works best with firmer, non-yielding surfaces such as platform beds, mattress foundations or bed slats.
Can you flip an Avocado mattress?
The Avocado mattress does not need to be flipped. This is because the support layer is at the bottom, so flipping the bed would compromise the comfort of the bed. The manufacturer does recommend you rotate the mattress once per month, for the first six months, then once every three months.
Does the Avocado offer a sleep trial?
Yes! Avocado offers one of the best sleep trials on the market- a full year!
Does Avocado offer a mattress warranty?
The Avocado Green is backed by a 25 year warranty!

Avocado Green Mattress Performance
While I could keep describing my experience on the Avocado in words, Id much rather show you what Im talking about than just keep telling you about it. So, to that end, Im going to walk you through a couple specialized tests. I measured how the Avocado Green mattress performed in different sleeping positions, how it relieved pain and pressure, and how it might feel for couples sharing a bed.
Avocado Mattress Vs Casper
When comparing the Avocado mattress vs. Casper, the original Casper is slightly firmer than the Avocado mattress, but theyre both good options for back and side sleepers. Theyre both slightly bouncy with a soft comfort layer on top.
The two mattresses differ in terms of construction. The Avocado has coils and memory foam, while the original Casper is an all-foam mattress. The Casper also has zoned support, so different areas of the bed feel firmer than others. Those who want a completely organic mattress should pick the Avocado because its made with all natural materials.
The Avocado mattress is more durable and offers better edge support than the Casper. We found the Casper is better at isolating motion than the Avocado.
The Casper mattress is more affordable than the Avocado, with a queen sized mattress coming in at $1.095. With the additional pillow top, a queen sized Avocado mattress costs $1,799.
Who Should Get the Avocado?

A Look At The Avocado Green Mattress
The Avocado Green Mattress is an American made, 100% eco-friendly and all-natural mattress. It is comprised of four layers with the option to add another 2 pillow-top comfort layer at an additional cost. Lets break down what the Avocado mattress is made of.
- ½ inch Joma New Zealand wool: The top wool layer of the Avocado mattress helps to regulate temperature, prevent moisture, and is antimicrobial. It is also comfortable to the touch and provides a soft point of contact for the body.
- 2 inches natural 100% Dunlop latex rubber foam : Natural latex is more responsive, breathable, and eco-friendly than synthetic foams. This comfort layer is supportive yet soft and very durable. It also provides a good balance between low motion transfer, ease of mobility, and bounce.
- 8-inch innerspring coil core: The majority of the Avocado Green Mattress is made up of its innerspring coil core. This support layer contains over 1000 coils, which are made in the USA from recycled steel. The coil core is divided into three different support zones. The pelvic and shoulder zones are slightly softer while the lumbar zone is firmer. This helps promote optimal spinal alignment.
- 1-inch high-density 100% Dunlop latex rubber foam: An additional base layer of extra-dense foam makes the Avocado Green Mattress especially supportive. Encasing the innerspring coil layer also adds to the durability of the mattress.
The Avocado Green Mattress is manufactured in California, in the USA.

When I moved to a new apartment, I finally had enough space for the ultimate adult luxury: a king-size bed. While I was upgrading in terms of space, I decided it was also time to think more carefully about the materials my mattress is made from.
I wanted a non-toxic mattress, not just for better sleep and health, but also to lessen my environmental impact. And I needed a supportive mattress to help with occasional back pain. It was time to go organic with an Avocado Green mattress.
Ive been sleeping on it for over a month, and this is my Avocado Green mattress review. What makes me an expert? As a former luxury hotel inspector, Ive slept on and evaluated hundreds of luxury mattresses. I also spoke with two sleep doctors for their professional takes.

Average Weight Sleepers 130lbs 230lbs
Average weight sleepers should find the Avocado mattress is quite comfortable while back sleeping. The pillow top allows hips to sink in, and the comfort layers gently contour the body.
The Avocado Green mattress is also a good option for average weight side sleepers. With the addition of the plush pillow top, sleepers should feel little pain on their pressure points.
Stomach sleeping, average weight sleepers may find the Avocado Green mattress doesnt provide enough support. Stomach sleepers will want to look for a firmer mattress that will prevent their hips from getting out of alignment.
Whats It Like To Unbox The Avocado Green Mattress
The Avocado Green Mattress is hard to moveit’s almost impossible to prop it up against a wall.
The Avocado Green Mattress is like most other mattresses in a box. It weighs a lot, but comes in jelly-roll form, making it easy to move into your home. I unfurled it in my living room to let it air out for a nighta best practice for any mattress in a box, which often release chemicals from manufacturing in a process called off-gassing after being decompressed and exposed to open air.
The Avocado mattress didnt smell like other mattresses Ive tested, which have a clearly chemical scent. The Avocados odor was almost indescribable. It wasnt quite natural, but it also wasnt entirely unnatural. It was almost like if you were to open a bag of tea that is several years old and had taken on the smell of the surrounding plastic pouch. Its not a terrible odor, but its still not something I wanted to press my face into right away, either, so I was glad to give it a night to breathe before sleeping on it.

Are There Organic Mattresses For Babies
Yes, there are certified organic crib mattresses for babies. Some crib mattresses are certified organic and include organic latex, wool, and cotton. Avocado has three styles of organic crib mattresses, which are GOTS certified organic products. Their natural materials make them more breathable and supportive for little ones.
What’s The Right Level Of Firmness
How much firmness one needs typically depends on how much they weigh and the position in which they sleep. Firmness is generally done on a 1 to 10 scale, with a 1 being extra soft and a 10 being extra firm. Our standard mattress delivers a gentle, yet slightly firmer sleeping experience. Our standard mattress is a 7. Our pillow-top mattress features an additional 2 layer of GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex and is softer and rates as a 6.
Which one is right for you? Extremely petite or light individuals benefit less from the additional layer of latex. That being said, approximately 75 percent of our customers opt for the luxurious pillow-top version of our mattress.

The Three Zones In Action
We can actually get a look at the three comfort zones using our sinkage test. Using my kitchen broom, I applied my 130 pounds to an area of around nine by seven inches. When I stood at the bottom third of the mattress, I sunk in about six inches. However, I experienced a depression of five inches in the middle . So, its easy to see that the product is slightly firmer to accommodate your lumbar area. Finally, the sinkage was six inches on the top third of the product.

Avocado Mattress Review Breakdown
The Avocado Green and Vegan mattresses are nearly identical in construction. Both hybrid models are 11 inches thick and fall at a 7 on the firmness scale, making them excellent options for individuals seeking a firmer-than-average mattress. Both variations contain a strong support core made from up to 1,414 8-inch pocketed coils and an inch of firm, GOLS-certified Dunlop latex. The pocketed coils are zoned to provide additional support for the spine, neck, and other critical areas, as well as a softer feel towards the mattress bottom and sides.
Both models also feature a 2-inch comfort layer made from sustainably sourced, GOLS-certified Dunlop latex. This layer allows air to circulate, providing additional temperature control and preventing sleepers from sinking into the support core.
The Avocado Green and Vegan differ only in the materials used for each models respective cover. Each cover features hundreds of hand-tufted rosettes, which use ribbons to bind the mattress layers together, creating a sturdy product without using chemical solvents or toxic adhesives. Avocado also avoids using chemical flame retardants in its Green cover, relying instead on naturally fire-resistant, GOTS certified organic wool from the companys own farm. While the Avocado Vegan cover does not contain wool, it is made from USDA certified organic cotton batting, which adheres to federal flammability standards.
8 pocketed coils, zoned with 3 gauges , stronger steel around perimeter

How Did We Test The Avocado Green Mattress
We tested the Avocado Green Mattress at home and in our Cambridge labs.
Im the sleep specialist here at Reviewed and have tested my share of mattresses. My main test is just what a regular person would dosleeping on it for 30 days. But thats where the similarities end: I also test mattresses for motion transfer using a Newtons cradle balanced on the mattress, I consider the edge support and whether the mattress would be easy to fall off of in the night, and more.
After a monthlong stint in my apartment, the mattress is sent to our lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There, our senior scientist, Julia MacDougall, tests mattresses for heat retention and performs additional motion transfer and responsiveness tests, like dropping a bowling ball in the center of the mattress. These tests provide standardized data on how mattresses dissipate or hold onto heat and capture information about how a mattress responds to movement that may be difficult to assess in subjective, personal tests.
