How We Picked And Tested
We started our research for this guide by evaluating about two-dozen cheap mattresses, using criteria similar to what we use for our main foam, hybrid, and innerspring guides. This is what we look for:
We also considered the quality of each mattress companys customer service, but in the end that didnt factor into our decision process. With the exception of a few standouts, customer service was subpar across the category compared with that of companies selling more-expensive mattresses. I got disconnected from multiple customer service calls after being on hold for several minutes, and most of the companies I contacted wouldnt reveal information, such as the foam densities of their mattresses. Several companies had average or poor ratings with the Better Business Bureau . On the whole, when you buy a cheaper mattress, you can expect to get less-personalized treatment and less access to customer service.
Eventually, I settled on five finalists: the Best Price Mattress Memory Foam, the Classic Brands Cool Gel Memory Foam, the Vibe Gel Memory Foam, the Zinus Cooling Copper Adaptive Hybrid, and the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam. How Do Mattress Types Vary By Price

Hybrid mattresses combine the foam layers of a memory foam bed and the coil construction of an innerspring mattress. A decenthybrid mattress ranges anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 and lasts about 10 years. Hybrids are more durable than memory foam, and you will pay for that.
Latex mattresses can reach prices up to $3,000 because of their naturally sourced materials, which cost more to produce. Latex mattresses often incorporate natural wool or cotton to increase breathability and increase the organic materials within the mattress construction. However, like hybrids, latex mattresses are highly durable, lasting up to 15 years and less likely to sag than layers of foam.
How To Get The Firmness Level Just Right
You have likely experienced various mattresses in your lifetime. Even if youve had the same one for many years, youve likely slept over at a friend or family members house or in a hotel. Weve all been on mattresses that we love and mattresses that we hate. It happens! Not every mattress is suitable for every sleeper and vice versa. Its likely that you have an idea of whether you prefer a soft, medium or firm product. However, as you shop online, how do you gauge your firmness preferences? The number you need to be on the lookout for is indentation load deflection. This is the amount of pressure measured in pounds it takes a 50 square inch circular indenter to compress the material a total of 25 percent of its total thickness.
An ILD of 12 pounds is very soft, and 50 pounds is very firm. This gives you a good idea of what will be best for you. Now, if youre not sure, theres a good chance you may fall into the majority as most people are well accommodated by a medium product, and this would be an ILD of anywhere between 25 and 31 pounds.
