Should You Get An Adjustment

Mattress firmness for back pain, hip pain, and shoulder pain? Bed firmness breakdown

It is a very wise idea to get a wellness adjustment from your chiropractor before you go mattress shopping. This can help relieve pain and help you have better posture and body support while you sleep. Ask your chiropractor for advice on sleeping positions, as well as recommendations for mattresses. Not only is your chiropractor a back expert, but he has probably heard a lot of recommendations from his patients who suffered from mattress-induced back pain.

A Mattress Should Be Sag Proof

A mattress made of low-quality materials that are not durable enough will sag in the center after a while. This would put pressure on your hips and cause pain. Also, this will impact your spine alignment and lead to spine disordersDisorders of the spine that will lead to hip bursitis.

The characteristics above are specifically significant when purchasing a hip bursitis mattress.

Questions To Ask When Choosing Your Own Mattress

When youre considering a mattress purchase, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What materials is this mattress made of? Does the company provide transparency about where the mattress materials are made and where theyre assembled?
  • Is there a specific feature, design, or material used in this mattress that makes it superior to others?
  • Does the price of this mattress match my budget?
  • Do I understand the trial period, return policy, and manufacturer warranty that comes with the mattress?
  • Have sleep experts, orthopedists, spine health specialists, or others endorsed this mattress for people with hip pain?

If youve identified that your current mattress is contributing to hip pain, youre likely ready to make a change. But at the end of the day, you have to be able to afford a mattress upgrade, and some people may worry that its just not in their budget.

Even if you arent able to splurge on a luxury mattress, you can still find relief. You can make the most of your spending with the following tips.

Sleep Position: How It Can Help Or Hurt

5 Best Mattress Toppers for Back Pain in 2020

Your sleeping position can cause you to wake up in pain if it puts added stress on your spine or if youre sleeping on an unsuitable mattress. Ideally, your sleeping position keeps your spine in its neutral position, neither raising nor lowering it out of alignment.

Changing your sleep position can reduce pain, as can sleeping on a quality mattress better matched to your sleep style.

Even if you have a supportive mattress, hip pain can make sleep a difficult thing to achieve. If youre already experiencing pain in your hips and cant quite get a good nights kip, rest easy – weve compiled some top tips to provide the perfect nights sleep, even if you feel like your memory foam mattress is causing hip pain rather than improving it.

Your Mattress Is Sagging

After years of daily use, even the very best mattresses will be subject to wear and tear, no matter whether its a good memory foam mattress, an innerspring, or a luxury hybrid option. However, once a mattress starts to sag, then it will soon be past the point of no return and no longer able to give your spine the proper support it needs for healthy sleep.

If you gradually start to feel your body dipping into your mattress as you sleep, this usually means the materials inside the bed have softened or lost their tension over the years. While you can make temporary adjustments with a pillow beneath your knees or hips, or use a high quality mattress topper to keep the surface level, these are no substitute for buying a new mattress.

The good news is many sleep brands offer lengthy warranties of up to 25 years as an assurance of quality. This is especially true with organic mattresses, which use naturally hard-wearing materials such as latex.

Its also advisable to flip or rotate your mattress following the manufacturers instructions not only will this keep your bed in better condition for longer and provide a more stable surface to sleep on, but it will also help keep it within the conditions of the warranty.

If you notice you sleep better on any other mattress, such as those in hotels and that those mattresses have a firmer, more even surface then this is another sure sign its time for an upgrade.

What Causes Hip Pain

How to Choose a Mattress & Pillow (For Neck, Shoulder, Hip, or Back Pain)

The most common cause of hip pain is osteoarthritis, or degeneration and inflammation of the joints. The ball and joint socket at the hip is the bodys largest socket joint. You may not think about it much, but your hip does a lot of work without flexibility in your hips, youd be quite literally stuck in place.

The cushion of cartilage in your hip socket prevents friction while youre moving around. As this cartilage gets worn down, pain ensues. Arthritis is the most common cause of this inflammation, but hip pain can develop from hip fractures, bursitis, tendinitis, or muscle strain. Some of these are temporary, while others may require more medical intervention.

Osteoarthritis : The most common cause of hip pain this occurs most often with old age and wear and tear.

Hip fractures: Hip fractures can occur as the result of weakened or brittle bones an effect of old age.

Bursitis: Bursae are sacs of liquid between the tissues that act as shock absorbers. If they become inflamed, this will result in pain. Anyone can develop bursitis, but its most often caused by overworking the joints.

Tendinitis: The tendons attach your bones to your muscles. They can get inflamed from overuse.

Muscle strain: Muscle strain is familiar to any of us who overwork our bodies. If you experience hip pain from muscle strain, rest for a few days and try not to irritate the joints any further. Try icing your sore muscles, too.

Does Sleeping On Your Back Help With Hip Pain

Sleeping on your back may reduce pain in your spine and shoulders while you sleep. However, theres not a lot of research to demonstrate the effect of sleeping on your back on hip pain.

If you have a chronic condition that causes back pain, sleeping on your back wont necessarily treat that condition or make your pain go away.

Any sleeping position that keeps your spine in neutral alignment will be better for your hips. The best way to sleep is in any position that helps you achieve deep, restful sleep cycles.

Just to add, we have recently bought a cheap one year old vispring spring divan base but my pain is still the same. My boyfriend says it’s firm but he is 4 stone heavier than me so isn’t experiencing pains from it.

PartialFancy · 22/03/2014 00:35

I’d suggest going to the GP about the pain, as that level of discomfort’s not normal at all. It’s good that a soft enough mattress can relieve the pain, but there’s clearly something wrong.

BillyBanter · 22/03/2014 00:40

I think if you are a side sleeper firm is not for you. A memory foam one would probably suit better. Go somewhere that does returns.

feesh · 22/03/2014 06:05

It sounds like you have a hip problem that was underlying and the firm mattress has just highlighted it. Please see your GP.

FunInTheSunD · 22/03/2014 06:14

I would also suggest seeing your GP, in the meantime I’d get a 14 tog duvet to use as a mattress topper, as they really soften up a firm mattress. I had hip pain so bad that I thought I would need a hip replacement. .. it turns out I have one leg slightly longer than the other and have a insert now… flat shoes and no insert brings it all back…
