Leesa Mattress Review – A Good Mattress For Side Sleepers?

The Leesa Original mattress is the bed that made Leesa a household name. This 3-layer memory foam mattress marries plush, responsive polyfoam with deeply cradling memory foam to create an excellent option for sleepers with aches and pains or side sleepers looking for pressure relief.

Weve put the Leesa mattress to the test in the Mattress Advisor lab to help you decide if its the mattress of your dreams. In this review, well share how the Leesa performed, what sleeping positions its ideal for, and more.

Who I Dont Recommend The Leesa Mattress For

  • I think most stomach sleepers are likely to want a mattress thats just a bit firmer than the Leesa. A firmer bed will help ensure even spinal alignment. We have some great options for these folks here.
  • If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, then Id recommend checking out our roundup of best innerspring mattresses instead. The Leesa will bring you more of a foam feel.
  • There is a strong off-gassing smell with this mattress when it comes out of the box, but it should go away after a day or two.

Leesa Legend Mattress Review

The Leesa Legend mattress combines the best of both worlds that we can find present in the Leesa Original and the Leesa Hybrid Mattresses.

Just like the Leesa Original mattress, this mattress contains top of the line memory foam that you can sink into and experience optimum comfort.

This mattress is also like the Leesa Hybrid in that it contains a dual-coil system that combines the best level of support from coils along with the plush comfort of memory foam.

What makes the Leesa Legend stand out from these other two Leesa mattresses is that it has a hypoallergenic organic cotton and merino wool cover that is made from recycled materials.

How Much Does The Leesa Sapira Hybrid Cost

Cost is an important consideration when buying a new mattress, regardless of your budget. The cost of the Leesa Sapira Hybrid is considered average as its not the most expensive, but its also not the cheapest.

This Leesa mattress has multiple foam layers, cooling capabilities, individually-wrapped coils, edge-to-edge support, and excellent motion insolation, which is partly why it costs slightly more than other brands. Plus, hybrid mattresses are typically more expensive than all-foam models because of the addition of spring coils.

My Leesa Mattress Recommendation

Get Your Best Night

I couldnt recommend the Leesa Mattress more. I have slept on beds in excess of $3,500 and the Leesa Mattress provides just as much if not more comfort at a fraction of the price with a better warranty/trial period!

If you are new to memory foam or just unsure about which mattress to purchase. The Leesa is a safe bet. Theres no risk so you can just try it for free to see if memory foam is right for you. The vast majority of people that go with a Leesa, love it. So chances are you will too! If not, you then have a point of reference to work from and I can help guide you to the perfect one.

Leesa Company Policy Information

The Leesa mattresslike Purple, and many others bed in a box mattresses come with several company policies to sweeten the deal of you buying a mattress.

Like basically every other brand in the game, shipping and returns are free. With Leesa you do have the opportunity to update to white glove delivery for $150. In terms of your trial period, Leesa offers a 100-night period for you to try out your mattress. Thats pretty standard, its not the longest trial, but its plenty of time to decide if the bed is right for you.

Leesa Original Vs Studio By Leesa

Product
Couples On A Tight Budget
Couples Memory Foam Lovers

The Studio by Leesa is the least expensive mattress the brand offers. Its an all-foam mattress thats an inch thinner than the original Leesa. Both mattresses are medium-firm and show good motion isolation. However, our team felt that the Studio was somewhat lacking in pressure relief.

For budget shoppers, you cant beat the price of the Studio. Its lower price also makes it a great option for kids or young couples. Heavyweight sleepers should probably find a mattress firmer than either the Studio or original Leesa mattress, as they may sink in too deeply to sleep comfortably.

Does It Have Any Smell

Leesa Hybrid Mattress

When you first take your Leesa Hybrid out of its packaging, there is a slight new mattress smell, and potentially a little off-gassing as a result of the manufacturing and packaging process.

However, the smell is gone within a few days and is not an ongoing issue at all. The Leesa Hybrid is an eco-friendly mattress and Certi-PUR certified as well.

Our research revealed a mere 12% of consumers reported issues with off-gassing but overall, the odor is minimal and does not hamper the primary features and benefits of this favored mattress.

What Is The Leesa Mattress Made Of

The Leesa stands at 10 inches with different types of foam inside. Lets break down the layers and materials.

Cover The Leesa has a soft and breathable twill fabric cover as its top layer. The twill weave allows for a higher thread count, making it not only soft, but also durable and wrinkle resistant.

Comfort Layer The Leesas comfort layer is really made up of two layers: a two-inch layer of breathable foam on top of a two-inch layer of memory foam. The breathable foam layer is more responsive than the memory foam layer. It also allows for more airflow, mitigating the heat trapping tendencies you see in some memory foam mattresses. Leesa says this will sleep cool, while also giving you some bounce. The second layer is memory foam, which offers some nice body contouring and helps to alleviate pain and pressure.

Foundation Layer The final support layer is six inches of supportive foam, which helps make this all-foam mattress durable.

Is The Leesa Mattress Cooling

Old school memory foam mattresses retained a lot of body heat, but better cooling technology is beginning to counter that tendency. For example, the top layer of the Leesa is perforated with holes, which helps to increase airflow under your body.

The Leesa is still a foam mattress, so it wont sleep as cool as one with coils or more advanced cooling features. When I tested it, there was no cooling sensation, but I didnt feel heat building up.Find more options for hot sleepers in our best cooling mattresses roundup.

A Look At The Leesa Mattress

The 100% American-made Leesa mattress is available in 6 sizes ranging from Twin to California King. It is comprised of 3 layers of adaptable foam designed to provide core strength, pressure relief, cooling, and bounce. The layers are:

  • Avena foam: This 2 top layer is an alternative to latex foam and creates a cooler sleep.
  • Memory foam: The next 2 layer provides support and pressure relief, and adapts to all body shapes and sizes.
  • Dense core support: The final 6 layer adds strength and structure.
  • All layers are breathable so the mattress will not absorb excess heat.

    Other features include:

    • Cover: The Leesa mattress has a unique cover cut from a single piece of fabric that wraps the entire mattress. The fabric is fairly thick and is constructed from a poly-lycra blend that wears well.
    • Frame compatibility: The mattress is designed to feel best when sitting on a firm, flat surface solid or slatted bases are recommended rather than traditional box springs. If using a slatted base, Leesa recommends that the slats be no more than 3 apart.
    • Certification: In addition to the hypo-allergenic quality of Avena foam, it is also CertiPUR-US®-certified.

How Much Weight Does The Leesa Mattress Support

The Leesa Original mattress has been tested for its weight capabilities. Its able to support sleepers who weigh up to 300 lbs. While we love the Leesa for plus-size back sleepers, stomach and side sleepers who weigh more than 230 lbs. may feel more support on a mattress with innerspring coils, like the Saatva Classic. Heavier side sleepers will need additional cushioning thats balanced by a stronger support base.

What Type Of Mattress Is The Leesa Hybrid

The Leesa Hybrid is a luxury hybrid memory foam mattress designed and developed with not only style and class, but with great comfort, support and the ability to provide relief from pain, especially back pain.

The multiple layers of foam keep this mattress feeling like new, year after year and delivers a level of comfort, according to our data, that most consumers rave about.

The Leesa Hybrid cover sports a single layer of fabric that surrounds the entire mattress and is constructed from a poly-Lycra blend.

This unique blend presents with a stretchy, soft and highly breathable cover that is every bit attractive as it is durable.

This mattress allows just the right amount of sinkage in order to create pressure relief for those critical pressure points.

Whether a stomach, side or back sleeper, this innovative mattress does a great job of supporting all sleeping positions.

How Is The Leesa Mattress Constructed

    Cover

The Leesa has a polyester and Lycra spandex blended cover. Lycra is a heat resistant, highly elastic synthetic fabric that pairs nicely with materials like nylon and polyester. The combination of materials used in this cover make it soft, breathable, and durable.

    Comfort Layers

This mattress is made up of two comfort layers. The first is 2 inches of high density, 3 PCF polyfoam. The second layer is 2 inches of low-density, 3 PCF memory foam. These two layers work together to create noticeable body-conforming which prevents pressure points from building and alleviates pain in the back, hips, and shoulders.

    Support Layers

The Leesas support core measures 6 inches thick and is made up of 1.8 PCF high-density Polyfoam. This layer of high-density foam provides a solid base for the softer comfort layer resulting in a balanced, supportive feel that promotes healthy spinal alignment.

    Mattress Height

The Leesa measures 10 in height. This is standard for memory foam mattresses. The 10 profile allows enough room in the comfort layers for the sleepers body to be sufficiently cradled, while still having room for a substantial foam support core.

    Leesa Vs Purple Mattress

Leesa Hybrid Mattress Review(+ vs Casper and Bear Comparisons!)

The Purple mattress is another wildly popular bed in a box option that offers stiff competition to other brands. The main difference between the Leesa and Purple mattresses can be found in their comfort layers. The Leesa features LSA200 foam and memory foam, and the Purple features a unique gel grid.

These materials give both mattresses a different feel the Leesa boasts a responsive, balanced foam feel while the Purple has a squishy yet firm gel feel. It is easy to move around on both mattresses, but the Leesa offers more of a recognizable feel, while the Purple is very unique.

We found both mattresses to have a firmness of 6.5/10, but larger and lighter sleepers might feel differently. Larger sleepers might think that the Leesa is firmer and the Purple is softer. Lighter people might not collapse the gel grid on top of the Purple, so it could feel firmer to them, but they might not press so far into the Leesa, and it could feel softer.

Because of these differences, the Leesa and Purple should work better for different types of people. The Leesa will work better for lightweight people, side sleepers, and those who prefer a balanced foam feel. The Purple will be a better choice for larger people, combination sleepers, and those who want something more durable.

    Leesa Mattress Pain Relief Performance

Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a mattresss ability to alleviate tension at pressure points. Depending on your sleeping position, youll want pressure relief in different areas. For example, side sleepers with pain need pressure relief at their hips and shoulders, while back sleepers with pain need it at the lower back.

To test the Leesas pressure relieving abilities, I used a pressure map, which I placed on top of the mattress. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue to green and orange to red .

Back Pain As you can tell by the mostly blue map, I felt some nice pressure relief while laying on my back, which helps alleviate pain in the lumbar region. I think this is the most comfortable sleeping position on the Leesa. However, I dont think side or stomach sleepers who suffer from back pain will get the relief they need on this mattress.

Shoulder Pain I think back sleepers with shoulder pain should feel really comfortable on this mattress, as shown in the pressure map results. However, side sleepers with shoulder pain may want to look for a softer mattress as it shows pressure building at my shoulder area. I think stomach sleepers with shoulder pain will want a firmer mattress to keep their spine in alignment.

What Is The Time It Will Take To Break In A Mattress That Is Brand New

Its dependent on the type of mattress you are buying and the firmness of it however, generally speaking, it can take anywhere between 30 days and three months to become accustomed with the brand new level of support and comfort. This is why some mattress manufacturers require you to rest on the mattress for at minimum 30 nights before theyll schedule a collection in case you dont love it.

If youre considering a different type of mattress to your old one for example, you previously slept on an all-foam model but now youre looking to purchase the hybrid mattress youll be able to tell the difference for a little time. In order to help you get comfortable with your new mattress, ensure that you give it the time it needs to completely disintegrate. If you do this, the mattress will give the best support and comfort from the start. It could take from a few hours up to 72 hours to complete this process Be patient.

Relax on different parts of your mattress and keep sleeping on it to help it bed in faster. Be sure to avoid sleeping in a different bed ) or on the sofa, as the faster you break in your mattress, the sooner you will be enjoying every single moment of sleeping in it.
