What Size Insert For 18×18 Pillow Cover

Consider The Type Of Fabric The Pillow Cover Is Made Of

How To Measure For A Pillow Cover

When youre searching for the perfect pillow insert, the fabric of your pillow cover is an important consideration. A natural fiber like cotton or linen will breathe better than a synthetic, so if youre prone to night sweats, you might want to avoid polyester and opt for a more breathable fabric. If you have sensitivities to down or feathers, there are several hypoallergenic options available as well.

The density of the filling is also something to take into account a firmer pillow will provide more support for your head and neck, while a softer one will be more comfortable for side sleepers. There are even special pillow inserts available for those who suffer from allergies or asthma.

Once youve decided on the type of fabric and filling you want, its time to select the right size pillow insert for your cover. The most important thing to remember is that the insert should be two inches larger than the cover on all sides so that it can fill out the corners and plump up the pillows. For example, if you have an 18×18 pillow cover, you will need a 20×20 pillow insert.

SIZING ADVICE:

Lay The Fabric Pieces Together

Square Pillow insert,Non Woven Polyester Cover With Poly Fiber Filling ...

Place your main fabric piece, face up on your work surface. This is the piece that will be the face of your pillow.

Now lay one of the 18 x 13 inch pieces on top of the main piece, wrong side up. Matching one side.

Now lay the second 18 x 13 inch piece on top of these two pieces. Matching the opposite side. This should give you a four inch overlay to make your envelope flap in the middle.

How Much Bigger Should A Cushion Cover Be Than The Cushion

As the size of the cushion cover will depend on the size and shape of the cushion, as well as the desired amount of coverage and drape. However, as a general guideline, the cushion cover should be approximately 2-4 inches larger than the cushion on all sides.

This will ensure that the cover can be easily tucked under the cushions and that there is enough material to create a pleasing, full appearance.

Consider The Thickness Of The Pillow Cover

The thickness of the pillow cover will also play a role in how full and plump your finished product looks. A lot of people mistakenly think that they need to get an insert that is the exact same size as their pillow cover, but this is not the case. In fact, you actually want your insert to be about 1-2 larger than your pillow cover. This will allow your pillow to have a full and plump appearance, without being too overstuffed.

  • Cut 2 pieces of fabric 18 inch by 13 inch each
  • Hem 1 long side of each of the 18 x 13 inch pieces with a 1/2 inch hem folded twice. Fold 1/2 inch. Press then fold up another 1/2 inch. Press. Sew the folded hem with wrong side up.
  • Place your main fabric piece, face up on your work surface.

  • Pin all four sides.

  • Turn the pillow cover inside out. Insert a pillow form.
  • I like to use this method to sew an 18 inch pillow cover since I machine embroider so many of my pillow fronts. This allows me to easily center the embroidered image. Or if you are using a fabric with a particular print you want centered.

Hem 1 long side of each of the 18 x 13 inch pieces with a 1/2 inch hem folded twice. Fold 1/2 inch. Press then fold up another 1/2 inch. Press. There you have a double folded hem.

Sew the folded hem with wrong side up. I like to use a hemming ruler to press my hem. This little ruler is invaluable. It can be picked up at your local fabric store, inexpensively.

I place the hemming ruler matching the raw edge of my fabric. Then fold the fabric onto the ruler matching how deep I want the hem. In this case, it is 1/2 inch. Then press the fabric onto the ruler. Sliding the ruler down the length of the fabric, pressing as you go. Next fold the hem onto itself. Press again. Now you have a 1/2 inch double fold hem.

Pillow Inserts/forms What Is The Right Size

My pillow covers are 18X18 – do I buy 18X18 pillow forms or 20X20? Are pillow inserts made to be the exact size or do you order up? Thanks

  • blubird

The pillow inserts should always be larger than the covers. So, for an 18×18 cover, a 20×20 insert should fill it perfectly, unless you deliberately want a soft and floppy pillow.

Are you talking about decorative pillows? I just bought some covers and now I’m having a brain fog…I think the size I bought was the “European” which are a perfect square, I think 20×20. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

But when I did a search all I found was 20 x 20 for the square pillows.

When my covers came in my 20 x 20 pillow seemed too small for them.

How Do I Know What Size Pillow Cover To Buy

Here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a pillow cover:

-Pillow covers come in a variety of sizes, so it is important to measure your pillow before you buy a cover.

-If you are buying a pillow cover for a decorative pillow, you will want to make sure that the cover is large enough to fit over the pillow and still have a bit of overhang.

-If you are buying a pillow cover for a body pillow, you will want to make sure that the cover is long enough to fit the pillow and still have a bit of overhang.

-Pillow covers are usually made with a zipper or an envelope closure, so you will want to make sure that the cover you choose has the right type of closure for your pillow.

What To Look For In Your Next 18 X 18 Pillow Inserts

When shopping for pillow inserts, consider the following factors:

    • Feel. One of the most important factors when purchasing pillow inserts is the feel. Before you buy your inserts, make sure that you have established what your preferred feel is. Do you want a soft and fluffy pillow for naps? Are you in need of lumbar support? Do you prefer an overstuffed pillow? Are they purely decorative or will your pillows be used while you sleep?
    • Number of inserts. Are you looking for just one or two inserts? Or, are you wanting to purchase multiple inserts? Decide roughly how many you want to buy as this will help you understand how much you are willing to spend. Also, you may want to search for inserts that come in larger quantities instead of just one or two packs.
    • Cost. Now that you know how many inserts you need, go ahead and establish a budget. Figuring out how much you are willing to spend total will give you an idea of the price range of the pillow inserts you are looking for.
    • Size. Some people prefer a very tight pillow that is packed with filling. In general, a pillow insert is going to decrease in size about 10% from the size listed. If you dont want a lose pillowcase, make sure your shams are a little smaller than your pillow insert.

How Do I Know If My Pillow Is Too High Or Too Low

Pillow Cover and Insert Tips & Tricks

First, consider the height of your mattress. If your mattress is on the taller side, youll likely need a higher pillow to maintain proper alignment. Second, consider your sleep position. If you sleep on your side, youll likely need a higher pillow to keep your head and neck in alignment.

However, if you sleep on your back, you may find that a lower pillow is more comfortable. Third, consider your personal preferences. Some people prefer a higher pillow for added support, while others find that a lower pillow is more comfortable.

Ultimately, its important to experiment with different pillow heights to find the one thats right for you.

It can be a confusing world, with sizing nuances from every manufacturer, knowing what to size up on, how much, etc. I’m so excited to give you my tried and true recommendations!
