The Secret To Perfect Throw Pillows

I recently bought a new throw pillow cover online. When I received it I realized it was larger than I expected. Which led me to a Google search for a pillow insert of that size. One thing led to another and I remembered there is a lot more to throw pillows than just popping the insert into the cover and calling it a day.

First, what the pillow insert is stuffed with makes a big difference in how it will look. Ideally, it should be down and feather filled. A mix of 50/50 or 30/70 is ideal. Pillows filled with polyester inserts will be obvious, I have a few of those myself and they just dont compare. However, being an animal-loving family over here I do hesitate to buy the feather- filled inserts.

Considering Pottery Barn is a high-quality retailer, I decided to order my pillow insert from them. I ordered one feather filled and one filled with an alternative filler to see for myself if maybe a higher quality retailer would have a higher quality synthetic insert.

Sizing Your Throw Pillow Inserts

You also want to keep in mind is the size of your pillow inserts in relation to your pillow cover. Honestly, I didnt know this for a long time. Your pillow inserts should be larger than your pillow cover! It makes perfect sense because you want your pillows to look plush and never limp. How large should you go? I thought it would be easiest to make you a visual cheat sheet for reference.

As for lumbar pillows you want to size up about 1 on your inserts for those.

When buying your pillow covers keep in mind that sharp pillow corners look more expensive than pleated.

Types of Pillow Inserts

Pottery Barn has two main types of pillow inserts from which to choose — down and down alternative. Check out some of the features of these inserts if you’re not sure which is right for you:

  • Down Inserts: This type of insert is filled with 100 percent duck feathers, making it incredibly fluffy and soft. The feathers are cleaned using a process that renders them hypoallergenic, so you don’t have to worry about the insert triggering allergy symptoms. These inserts are dry clean only.
  • Down-Alternative Inserts: If you love the feel of a down pillow but don’t want feathers, opt for a down-alternative insert. These inserts contain polyester fill that mimics the bouncy softness of an authentic down pillow. Down-alternative pillows are easier to clean, as they can be laundered in the washing machine.

Both types of inserts are covered with a 200-thread-count cotton fabric. They come shrink wrapped but become fluffy as soon as they’re unwrapped.

    Rating The Top 5 Amazon Pillow Inserts

    5. Foamily Starting in last place, contrary to its name, this pillow isnt actually made out of foam, but more of a synthetic polyfill. This pillow instantly filled with air upon opening and the covering is more of a mesh material than a cotton which isnt a deal breaker but it is odd! This one is the most lightweight which I dont love, and it also has the quickest rebound when you squish it. Bounces right back, so you couldnt get a chop if you wanted to. This one cant stand on its own and theres no filling in the corners. Bottom line: I wouldnt recommend this one. $19 for a 22×22 and 9 size options

    4. Edow Next in line, this pillow came VERY flat. I definitely had to work with it a bit to fluff it up, but overall it fluffed decently! Its lightweight, which means it cant stand by itself. Its hard to get the lumpy fill spread into the corners, which means they dont have a very stiff point. Its actually surprisingly comfortable! $18 for a 22×22 is a great price point, so if you dont mind a slightly lumpier pillow, this could still be a great option. This pillow only comes in 5 size options, all square.

    If your throw pillows are looking a bit flat and sad, its likely your pillow insert isnt ideal. If you can swapping out the insert can drastically improve the look of your throw pillowbut not every insert is created equal. Ive bought many a pillow insert, and have discovered that it can honestly make or break everything. So how can you tell which pillow insert is the best?? Well I bought the top 5 pillow inserts from Amazon and put them to the test so you dont have to! The biggest things I want out of a pillow are density, weight, comfort, perky corners, and of course a good chop! Heres what I found.

    Sidenote: Always size up your pillow insert. If your cover is 20×20, get a 22×22 insert for a fuller, more dense looking pillow.

    Feather Down Vs Synthetic Filled Pillow Inserts

    Once I received both inserts, I tested them each out with my new throw pillow cover. This is how my pillow cover looked with the synthetic pillow insert*.

    Here is how this same cover* looked with the feather insert.

    I was really hoping the down filled insert would be the one being sent back but after comparing the two, the down really does look and feel better. Ill be returning the synthetic cover.

    Where To Buy The Best Pillow Inserts

    One of the most asked questions I get is, Where should I buy inserts? There are so many options out there, and I have religiously stuck to a few major retailers over the years. But, Ive always wondered in the back of my mind, especially when Im asked for recommendations what if there are better options out there that I dont even know about!?

    WHY IS IT SO HARD?

    Not only are there so many manufacturers making pillow inserts, every single manufacturer uses different amounts and types of fill! Even when you think youve found the deal of the century, you possibly just bought a half full pillow insert which is a huge bummer!

    HOW CAN I HELP?

    I came to realize that it is my sworn pillow dealer duty to be armed with this knowledge. Why should I hawk pillow covers if I cant confidently tell you where to buy inserts?! I reached out to you on my , to see where you like to buy inserts from. I received a variety of gracious responses, but the ones that I received multiple suggestions on, I tested out. It came to the following 5 companies:

    It did tie for 2nd place on its stuffed look. I can only surmise it finished decently, because the feathers/down had more area to disperse . It just needs to improve its grades in the other areas before Id fully pass along this recommendation.
